Polishing of plastics

Details

The edges of acrylic often have a frosty appearance after being router cut. To ensure a product has the perfect finish - a ‘sparkling’ finish, we offer we a range of edge polishing facilities:

Flame Polishing

The most common way of using. Flame polishing units use electrolyte fluid to generate gas which fuels a flame at the end of a fine nozzle. When the tight flame is passed quickly along the edges at a steady speed with a rough acrylic surface, it fuses the surface faces together, producing a polished edge.

Manual polishing (Hand Polishing)

Acrylic parts can be manual polishing either by holding the part against a rotating polishing disk or hand-polished with a cloth bearing special polishing paste.

The method can polish larger surfaces or sloping sides. Possibly minor scratches can be removed. It consumes a long time and used only for prototypes, small batches, expensive parts or repairs.

Diamond edge polishing

This procedure offers high-end edge finishing of the plastic product without changing the plastic edge properties. The feed system guides it over a rotating diamond tipped cutter hub, which removes a small amount from the edge of the material. The combination of machine accuracy and cutter geometry can convert a sawn edge to a mirror or satin polish in one operation.
This process is often used for shopfitting products.
